Aquila
Aquila, Latin for Eagle, carried Zeus’s lightning bolts in Greek-Roman Mythology. Aquila is situated on the Celestial Equator. |
Aquila was one of the 48 constellations described by Claudius Ptolemy and is now one of the accepted defined 88 constellations we have today. It has also been mentioned previously by Eudoxus (408-355BC) and Aratus (310-240BC) (Chisholm 1911).
The constellation was also known by the Romans as the Vultur Volans (The flying vulture), which bears a similar resemblance to Vultur cadens (Lyra).
Ptolemy catalogued 19 stars jointly with the obsolete constellation Antinous (Named after an Emperor named Hadrian (AD 117-138)).
Tycho Brahe catalogued 12 stars in Aquila and seven in Antinous, while Johannes Hevelius determined Aquila and Antinous had 23 stars and 19 stars respectively.
Aquila has 10 main stars, 65 Bayer stars. 9 of the stars have confirmed planets and 3 stars are brighter than magnitude 3.0.
